What am I doing wrong

2007-06-30 17:23:29

The scale hasn't moved in a week, what am I doing wrong (except weighing to
much)?
I am not eating that much. Yesterday all I had was 1/2 a pack of oatmeal,
two pieces of cheese and 3-4 ozs of potato soup. That is a typical day for
me. Expect durning the work week I will drink a bottle of isopure protein.
I am not walking as much as I should be, but I did clean house all day
yesterday, that should have been some exercise.
I need advice, please.

Re: [Dr_Hargroder] Saturday Meeting is On

2007-06-30 16:42:58

I am 99.9% sure the Saturday meeting will happen.

I see no reason why we can not have a meeting on Saturday Dec. 18th. We seem to have an alternative location to have the meeting if the hospital is not available to us. I will email more information (i.e. time and definite location) later this week. This meeting like all our meeting is open to all so lets have some Vista people too.

LETS HAVE A GOOD TURN-OUT.

Talk to you Lighter...

Bubba

Hi Shaune,

Congratulations on the birth of Avery. She is so beautiful. I am glad to hear you are both doing well. We will miss you at our meeting and look forward to seeing you soon.

Thanks for posting the reminder for our meeting I know you have your hands full. It is nice to know you are keeping up with us. Thanks again. God Bless.

Have a Merry Christmas.

Bubba

Congratulations Shaune!

So glad to hear all went well with the baby! She is absolutely
beautiful! And you look radiant holding her!
If you take as much care with her as you do with us, she is one
lucky little girl. You'll be an awesome momma.
Congratulations sweetie!
Jodi

Meetings, greetings & Christmas

2007-06-29 22:50:27

Hello folks! Hope all are doing well!
I will not be able to attend the Tuesday meeting, since I will be
at church, trying to get myself into heaven and all...
I would LOVE for everyone to get together on a Saturday (the 18th
sounds terrific) so the variety of groups can meet! I feel like I
know some of you already! So if my vote counts for anything, I vote
YES!
Well, I attended my first post-surgery Christmas party Friday
night. I did pretty well food-wise. Just a bit of munching, but
nothing over-extending. However, I DID discover that I can drink
alcohol & it has no ill effect on me. I am not sure if this is a
good thing or a bad thing. Some wine & some mixed drinks... and they
all went down fine. Nothing with carbonation in it, because that
stuff just hurts.
Can't drink milk, but rum seems to be okay.
Go figure.

The pill may be culprit behind false-positive Pap tests
Source: (cancerfacts.com)
Monday, July 07, 2003
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- July 7, 2003 -- Women who take oral contraceptive pills may get an inaccurate Pap smear test if their physicians use a specific kind of Pap test.
The researchers found that of the 84 women who tested abnormal with the ThinPrep® Pap smear, two-thirds were found to have no abnormal cervical squamous cells upon rechecking.
The research team led by Dr. Gerard Nuovo of the Ohio State University School of Medicine, found that in each case, the cells lining the cervix looked like cells infected with the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus (HPV), a leading cause of cervical cancer. All of the women were taking oral contraceptives at the time of the initial test. The study appears in a recent issue of the journal Cancer Cytopathology.
"That's a lot of women who were told that they had a venereal disease but really didn't," Nuovo said in a prepared statement. "Not only that, but HPV is also a precursor of cervical cancer. We don't see cases of cervical cancer without the virus present."
When diagnosing a Pap culture, pathologists look for irregularities in cervical squamous cells. Squamous cells line the surface of an organ.
The faulty Pap smears were originally diagnosed using the ThinPrep Pap test, a fairly common test that filters out red blood cells and inflammatory cells in a Pap smear, making it much easier for pathologists to see any abnormalities in cervical squamous cells. Nuovo believes that it's the nature of the ThinPrep testing method a high-pressure system that filters out unwanted cells that changes the physical appearance of healthy squamous cervical cells to look like cells infected with HPV.
Nuovo and his colleagues reviewed six months' worth of ThinPrep® Pap test data from nearly 1,000 women on oral contraceptives. They compared the rates of atypical squamous cells detected in this group to the atypical squamous cells rates in more than 1,200 Pap smears from women not taking birth control pills. The reported rate of low-grade dysplasia among women taking an oral contraceptive was more than twice that of the women not taking birth control pills (9 percent vs. 4 percent).
"That's a huge difference," Nuovo said. "It meant that either oral contraceptives put a woman at higher risk for developing abnormalities in her cervix, or that the testing method was somehow causing healthy cells to mimic virus-infected cells."
Going with the latter theory, the researchers went a step further and re-analyzed the Pap smears from the women in the oral contraceptive group. The specific kinds of oral contraceptives the women used weren't named in the study. The researchers used a testing method that tested specifically for the presence of HPV in cervical squamous cells.
They found that just 33 percent of the 84 Pap smears that had originally tested positive for low-grade dysplasia actually contained abnormal cells.
"This relatively low detection rate suggests that apparently abnormal cervical cells in most young women taking oral contraceptives really only mimic HPV infection," Nuovo said. "The ThinPrep test was causing changes in the cells that we had never seen before with a conventional Pap test."
While the healthy and infected cervical cells were similar in shape and size, the key to detecting HPV infection resided in the area surrounding the cell nucleus. In infected cells, this space was clear; in healthy cells, the area was slightly cloudy.
Nuovo thinks that it's the high-pressure filtration system used by the ThinPrep Pap test that flattens out healthy cervical squamous cells, changing their shape to resemble those that look like the flat, round cells infected with HPV.
There are subtle differences, however, between a healthy and an HPV-infected cell; for one, healthy cervical cells have a glassy, opaque look, while infected cells are clear. A well-trained pathologist should be able to make the distinction, Nuovo said.
He advises women who test positive for atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance to request that either a second pathologist re-check her Pap test results or that she undergo testing for HPV. Such tests run from about $50 to $150 and insurance generally covers most of the cost, Nuovo said. He also suggests that a woman ask her doctor which Pap testing method the lab uses.

Hello! December Support Group meeting reminder

2007-06-29 06:43:21

HELLO EVERYONE!!!
I hope everyone is doing fantastic, and that you all had a Happy
Thanksgiving! I truly had so much to be thankful for this year...
Avery Claire was born two days before Thanksgiving on November 23,
2004. She weighed 6 pounds, 3 ounces and was 19 1/2 inches long.
She was a bit early, due to my elevated blood pressure....my doctor
thought it would be best for both she and myself if she went ahead
and took her. So....she is here!! Mike and I are so thankful to
have a beautiful, healthy baby girl to love! I have posted a
picture of her.
I am so sorry that I will not be able to join all of you for the
December meeting. It will be held on Tuesday, December 7 at 6:30
p.m. at the RWMC Cafeteria. Everyone is invited to bring a dish
(and the recipe to share with everyone) like we did last year. Keep
in mind....there is no pressure to bring anything, but we did have
some delicious items last year!!! If you have any questions, please
contact Karen Simpson at 225-687-5673. I hope you have a great
meeting....and best wishes for a wonderful Holiday Season!
Take Care-
Shaune

Re: [hpv_support] aldara...still a wart or irritation?? please help!

2007-06-28 19:58:36

The maximum approved time to use Aldara is 16 weeks.
Apparently you have been using it for at least 25
weeks. The Aldara itself can cause redness. If the
Aldara is not working you might consider a different
approach to managing them.

aldara...still a wart or irritation?? please help!

2007-06-28 12:15:24

i've been using aldara for about 6 months now and its helped somewhat...except for the warts i have now which wont seem to go away. but anyhow i have about 5 right now and a couple are no longer raised but the area is still red. now i dont know if the wart is gone and the red is just irritation from the aldara, or if i should still keep applying it. also there is an area where i dont even remember treating for a wart but it's just a small red patch, i put aldara on it for a short period of time and it did nothing to it. im not sure what it is from. if anyone has any suggestions or personal experiences i would appreciate some help on this subject.

Hi Giff,
I think that's a great question. I don't know the answer, but am
very curious. If you happen to find something will you please let us
know.
My doctor acutally used some sort of vinegar test on me when I was
first diagnosed. Has anyone heard of such a thing for men?

Re: [hpv_support] good info

2007-06-27 14:19:02

does anyone know of any tests out there for men....i do not have any warts or any signs, but my ex has lesions on her cervix that were diagnosed as HPV. We dated for 2 years so i pretty much have it...but would like a test to be sure....every doctor ive talked to said there is none...is this true

Will I have the HPV virus forever?
Probably not. HPV infection is very common, but it usually goes away within 1-2 years.

I am shocked to have a virus that is usually sexually transmitted! How should I respond?
Just remember that almost everyone gets HPV at some time. HPV is not likely to change your life. If you have tested positive for HPV there may be a short period of time during which follow-up may seem to be a bother, but little more. Cervical cancer, the most serious problem associated with HPV, is rare and almost always prevented through regular testing for cervical cell changes that could lead to cancer.

Key Points to Remember:
Cervical cancer is preventable. Early detection of abnormal cell changes is important.

Almost all women will have HPV at some point, but very few will develop cervical cancer.
The immune system of most women will usually suppress or eliminate HPV. Only HPV infection that does not go away over many years can lead to cervical cancer.

It can be helpful to know your HPV status.
This can help determine how often your clinician will recommend that you be tested.

Dont blame yourself or your partner.
Your HPV status is not a reliable indicator of your sexual behavior or that of your partner.

Coming To Atlanta? Things You Should Know!

2007-06-27 08:04:43

1) Most Important: The registration fee is presently $38.00. After July 20th, it will go up to $48.00 so, if you haven't paid your fee yet, get a move on! Click here to pay by credit card: http://www.AtlantaHClub.com/eventfee.htm, or you can mail a check or money order to:

Matthew Murray

643 Main St.

Palmetto, GA 30268

If you choose to pay by check or money order, please send your email address so that we can let you know we have received your payment. Also, if you are paying for someone else, please include that person's name as well.

2) We are now advising everyone to call 404-762-7676 to make your reservations, rather than using the toll-free line. We're sorry for this inconvenience but, after several mix-ups with the toll-free operators, we think it's best to do it this way. Please be sure to tell them you are with "The Atlanta Club" to get the special rate of $79.00 per night!

3) Saturday night is Fiesta night and we are encouraging everyone to "get into the spirit"! You can get sombreros, maracas, and other "South of the Border" stuff at Party City (that IS a national chain, isn't it??) Not sure how much the maracas are, but I know the sombreros are around $3.00 or so. I am still looking for a place that carries ponchos and the colorful mexican skirts and tops. If you know where I might find those, please let me know! (someplace besides a costume shop, I mean)

4) I'm sure there's more but I can't think of anything else just now. For all the details on the event, please go to:

http://www.AtlantaHClub.com/hotlanta2003

Or Email Us:

Atlanta H Club @ Atlanta H Club.com

Hope to see you all there!

Mike...
it goes away.
Hey, lemme answer it:
(What have I done to myself, #1 question everyone asks post-op...)
YOU HAVE CHANGED YOUR LIFE. You will like yourself more and more
each day now. And the scale...you used to hate the scale, right?
(Wiz smiles and thinks of how she had to buy a special weight
watcher's scale because she already red-lined the old one.) Mike...I
had surgery 2 months and 4 days ago. I've lost 42 lbs. I can weigh
on a normal scale.
The bowls you used to eat out of...they're going to dry rot. Get
used to people telling you how good you are looking...
It takes a few weeks to adjust. Stock up on Sugar Free Popcicles.
They are my favorite thing now. Be sure you get the Sugar Free
Popcicles... There's another kind at Wal Mart, they come in a bag
and cost about $1.50. They have banana and coconut and blue
rasberry. They're not bad.
As far as Blue Bell...ummm...nobody wants a green popsicle...
Drink your protein. Make sure it's whey. Don't get soy, you won't
lose as much weight. I've tried all the bars and everything, the
scale gets stuck.
And watch out for sorbitol. Rule of thumb: if sorbitol is an
ingredient...only eat ONE. Unless you're constipated.

Everyone was very nice, everything was very clean, everything was fine.

knows nohting of) and judges you based on naive
assumptions makes this guy a jerk, in my book. I
would guess that he is older and religious (not that
being religious in a general sense means anything, but
there are certain stereotypes, 'moral' beliefs, etc.
that go hand in hand - don't read too much into this,
though). There are people that make 'assumptions'
about other people based on their 'perceived' moral
values. This is very problematic of our society in
general and it speaks quantities about the state of
the country, as a general populace.
Second, as a son of Naturopathic physician, I can
informatively tell you that he (your doc) knows
nothing about holistic health, nor does he care to.
There are many, the younger doctors, that are
accepting the fact that typical medicine is not the
only answer, and in many cases, not the best one. I
could go on and on, but anyone who denounces a much
older way of treatment, much more thoroughly used
throughout the world, in one general defacto statement
will be wrong about many things. Its just naivete,
plain and simple.
I am not trying to say that holistic medicine is the
only way, not by any means. There is a time and a
place for everything.
I would find yourself a decent physician, one that
won't judge you based on something that is with 70-80%
of the sexually active population (you should ask how
he feels about them, no doubt his answer will be to
abstain from sex until marriage - I had a doc tell me
that). Your doctor should also encourage you to learn
what you can. He knows nothing about holistic healing
(as a group, as there are many different types), just
that he's been told that it is not 'scientifically'
proven (and it won't be, because there are no drug
companies making billions off the products to fund
research in one conclusive study, which they have to
do anyway because all drugs have side effects where as
most holistic healing does not).

Hi, new to the group

2007-06-23 11:14:36

Hi,
My name is Carrie, and I was diagnosed with HPV with mild dysplasia
in February. My gynecologist was not very nice to me about it at
first, he treated me as if I'd been sleeping around and was
accusatory in his tone....when I've only had 5 partners my whole life
(I'm 28) and my husband and I have been together for three years and
neither one of us have cheated on the other. My gynecologist also
did not give me much information about HPV, and even though I was
very active in college in peer education about STDs I had heard very
little about it was. I had to read a few books (one of them which I
highly recommend is by Dr. Henderson and called "Women at Risk") in
order to make sense of it.
From what I understand, we will never be able to get rid of this
virus, but we can suppress it. I was never prescribed with anything,
but I have heard of some herbal treatments out there from doing a lot
of reading. Is there anyone out there who has tried some herbal
treatments and had success with them? I mentioned vaginal
suppositories with vitamin C (Vag-pak is one of them) to my doctor,
and he told me they wouldn't help and to stay away from information
on herbal treatments and holistic health...that it wouldn't help at
all.
I am overweight, so I know I need to make a lot of lifestyle changes
to be in good health and battle this thing. My lifestyle of working
too hard and overeating definitely is going to take lots of time. I
would like to hear from others about what they have used for
treatment, and the steps they are taking for a healthier lifestyle.
Thanks :)
Carrie

Re: [hpv_support] How do deal with my boyfriend?

2007-06-23 06:29:58

I am not sure exactly what you mean by this quote, but
I'll make an assumption...
"Not many studies say this can show
up even if you use pertection."
You are saying that studies show that this won't show
up with protection? Or, rather, that protection
works? That is incorrect, if that's what you mean.
It is a skin to skin transmission, not a fluid
transmission (like most stds) where a condom would
provide protection. Therefore, you needn't blame
yourself for having unprotected sex (although I would
always suggest that you wait until you both are tested
for other stds, as you never know who has what, or
even they may not know).
Talk with the guy. You don't seem so sure you had it
before him. Perhaps he had it and was not aware of
it. He could have carried it without any symptoms and
would have had no idea what he had. Same could have
been the case with you.
Eitherway, you need to talk to him about it. Most
likely, he has it also. You should try not to
approach the situation with apologies - no one is to
blame, it is just part of the risk in life (and sex).
You should try to work on this together, and explain
to him what hpv is, how it's transmitted (with or
without a condom), and that 70-80% of the sexually
active people have it, but only 5% know they do (and
that you both could have or may not have, had it
before, but that is not important anymore). The most
important thing is to accept this as a couple, as it
is now both of your responsibilities.

My boyfriend was treated at a local men's health clinic at a very very low cost. You might try looking for a similar clinic in your area. If you are a student or have low income there are almost discounts for the services rendered.

Georgia,

I will talk to them at River West on Dec. 7th about a Saturday meeting. I am thinking if we have the meeting there Shawn or Karen or someone will have to be there with us as a sponsor like we do for our regular monthly meeting. They do this on their own time and asking them to give up a Saturday maybe hard to get them to do because they work five days a week like the rest of us. But that is just my opinion I have not ask them but I will find out more on the 7th.

We will make this happen somehow somewhere.

Talk to you lighter...

Condysil?

Does anybody have experience with this treatment?

Recently diagnosed with HPV. I have one GW that has not been treated for over a year and a half. I NEVER imagined that it could be related to an STD (I've had a small number of partners, and always practiced safe sex). But now I know better. I do not have health insurance and cannot visit the doctor until at least September. I would like to try treating this as soon as possilbe in an attempt to rid myself of the physical manifestations of the disease in the meantime. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Melanie,
I'm sorry to hear about your frustrations. I'm not sure if I can
shed any light on the situation, but I can tell you what I have
experienced. I also have a doctor who I think is learning about hpv
along with me. I first saw her last November when she did a biopsy,
colposcopy and then cryotherapy on me. I think the only reason I
stick with her is because I get a papsmear and liquid nitrogen
treatment for external warts, every three months. She has also given
me a lifetime supply of aldara. She diagnosed me with both low and
high risk hpv. Even though I think I am doing everything I can
possibly do, I have made an appointment with another doctor on the
25th of August. Even though my insurance won't pay for this one, I
feel that knowledge is piece of mind. My thearapist actually made
the referral and even though this doctor isn't what you would call an
hpv specialist, apparently, she has allot of experience with hpv.
So, if I were you, I would ask your doctor if she knows what kind of
hpv you have. If she doesn't understand the question, ask her if you
have low-risk, or high-risk, or both. If you had a colposcopy, there
should be something in your file. If there isn't, something is
fishy.
As for the infections, it's my limited understanding, that hpv can
change the chemistry of the vagina (causing yeast infections, etc).
But that's limited knowledge - I with I could help you more here. I
absolutely would not use aldara for anything other than external
warts. It isn't for anything else. And if you have an infection, it
will probably hurt like hell and make things worse. I think your
doctor is a little bit confused.
When your doctor says things like "you don't have the kind that cause
genital warts" and "the strain you have doesn't affect men", I get a
little angry. No one can say those things for sure. I want to know
how she knows those things. That's a bunch of who ha! The "strain"
huh? And just what kind of strain does she think you have? That
would be my first question for her. - sorry, I didn't mean to get a
little angry there. : )
I think you should seriously think about getting another opinion. If
I were you, I would probably go to planned parenthood or something
like that and ask some questions. If nothing else, maybe they can
refer you to a doctor, in your area, who knows something about hpv.
Before you go to the doctor, write your questions down and go ahead
and take notes if you want. I don't know about you, but my head
starts spinning when I feel cold medal and they start talking about
warts. ug!
One other thing, you were talking about mirrors and crazy positions.
When I first saw a doctor, she told me to squat over a mirror. So, I
use a magnified mirror with lights and that seems to work the best.
Please let us know if you have any other questions and keep us
informed as to how things are going.
best of luck.

I am having the same thoughts. I felt a lot of resent towards my boyfriend when he told me. I kept thinking, what if he is not the right one, now I have this and how am I going to convince someone else to want to be with me. I have seen several sites for singles with HPV but who wants to be limited to a group like that. Maybe itˇÇs a good place to start, however. As a woman, I am concerned about having children and also cervical cancer. Maybe in a few years there will be a vaccine. I wish I had some real advice but I can only offer my condolences and say that IˇÇm in the same place you are.

Laurie

new w/ questions.... never heard that one before, huh? :)

2007-06-19 23:37:17

Hi there -
I'm new to the group... and of course, I have questions. My doctor
only half answers the questions I ask her, and I sometimes don't
think she even knows what the heck she's talking about. It seems from
the info I can find online that so very little is known about HPV,
*especially* if you don't have warts.
I was diagnosed with HPV about 2 years ago (age 26 at the time) -
after not having been sexually active for 7 years (yes, really, :P).
I've never had a genital wart, and never shown any symptoms, other
than an abnormal pap about 5 years before diagnosis. I had a
colposcopy then (and have had two since - if I NEVER have to do that
again, I will be thrilled), but my doctor then (changed doctors
since) said she found nothing. All paps were normal after that until
2 years ago. My doctor had very little information for me upon
diagnosis, only that it was the most common STD, that I didn't have
the one that caused genital warts (though she's never told me which
one I have), and that it meant paps every six months (oh yay). She
also said that the strain I have doesn't affect men (I had JUST met
my now boyfriend and was worried more about that...) but that they
can carry it and infect others.
She did mention something about infections... and this is where my
first question comes in. At the time I did some research, and
concluded that this was mainly just an annoyance. I seem to remember
reading though that women with HPV were more prone to other
infections (though I may have made this up - I cannot seem to find
what I read before). Anyway, since then I've had BV (bacterial
vaginosis for those of you who have not yet suffered that indignity),
two yeast infections, and now I've got some sort of mysterious
bacterial infection that won't go away. Just today I got back results
after having been treated and seen again - no go. Still there. On to
the second round of Azithromycin. My doctor again mentioned that this
had something to do with the HPV, but good lord, she just doesn't
fully explain anything. (My BF also had to be treated, as she said
it's an infection that can be passed around, though it's not an STD
[?] and the most frustrating part is that she's instructed me to have
no sexual relations until this is cleared up. Um. That is not easy.)
Has anyone else experienced more problems with infections since
contracting HPV? Or is it just me? Can anyone possible shed any light
onto a mysterious bacterial infection that has some sort of effect on
how often you have to pee, but isn't a bladder infection??
The second round of questioning kind of ties into all this too. Even
after treating the yeast infection, I've had some pretty bad problems
with itching. When I asked the doctor about it, she mentioned Aldara,
even though I do not have warts (I have checked and double checked,
feeling around and getting into some weird poses in front of the
mirror. :P). I cannot find anything online that suggests you should
use Aldara on anything but the actual warts, in fact one of the side
effects seems to be itching, so it seems an odd suggestion to me.
Anyone come across this sort of phenomenon?
I'm going to try and corner her and MAKE her answer more completely
next time, but in the meantime, I'm looking for information to arm
myself with. Any know-it-alls out there (and I mean that in a good
way) who can help me build the arsenal?
Ok, and one more probably stupid question: I had warts on my hand
when I was a kid, and have had a flat wart on my neck since I was 10.
(Never cared enough to get rid of it, and you can't really see it.) I
know that everything I've read says that those and the STD version of
HPV and genital warts are all supposed to be different... but I'm
just curious how many of you have had other kinds of warts. Feel free
to email me privately or whatever you like. (Even though I doubt
there are more than 3 people who have read this far, and even less
that will respond. :P)
Pardon my first post being this long, and I hope no one's offended by
the sense of humor I use to deal with this kind of crapola. I just
find if you can't laugh about something, the only other thing to do
is wallow in misery, and that isn't near as fun as laughing about
it. :)
Also, I just have to say, I went back and read past posts before
posting this, and I'm really impressed with the way you all deal with
this stuff - and I'm glad I found you guys already. If it weren't for
reading all of your frank and open emails, I wouldn't have asked all
these questions. So, what I'm saying is, it's your own fault. :)
(just kidding, of course.)
Thanks!
Melanie

Re: [hpv_support] new w/ questions.... never heard that one before, huh? :)

2007-06-19 22:32:56

There are many different types of the hpv virus. The
numbr of types identified seems to grow everyday.
I've seen estimates as high as 150. Some types cause
the common warts that kids often get on their fingers.
Other types infect genitals and other parts of the
body. These types are often called genital hpv or
ghpv. Certain types of ghpv have been shown to cause
cell changes that can lead to cervical and other
cancers, particularly cervical cancer. These types
are referred to as high-risk types, while the
remainder are referred to as low-risk types.
Generally, its the low-risk types that cause the
warts, although only a small percentage of those
infected with hpv will have warts. The rest of the
people infected remain symptomless.
Having warts doesn't insure that you have a low-risk
type since you could be infected with another type as
well, and having a high-risk type doesn't mean you
won't get warts.
There is a test that is used to distinguish between
low- and high-risk types. You did not say if you had
this test, but the behavior of your doctor
(recommending frequent paps) suggests that it may
have been done. Women who are infected with one or
more high-risk types of the virus should be examined
more frequently since they have a higher risk of
developing dysplasia.
If someone is infected with an hpv virus, he or she
could have a variety of symptoms other than warts.
For example, redness and itching are possible. It
would be interesting to hear from other members of the
group about other hpv symptoms. It would also be
interesting to hear if others have experienced any
other types of infections.
It sounds like you and your doctor don't see eye to
eye on how much information a doctor should reveal to
a patient. You might do better finding a different
doctor who is more willing to share thoughts and test
results with you. If you can afford it, a second
opinion may be helpful. Every doctor has a different
style and set of experiences.

2007-06-19 11:30:50

I went back to work after 3 weeks and I wish I had waited 4 weeks. I
felt like I was ready but I barely made it through the day for a few
weeks after that. I think the extra week would have helped. I think
that part of it is that you are in a very rapid weight loss stage and
are eating basically nothing. It gets better, I promise. Take care
of yourself and be patient.
I also weighed myself every day and sometimes more than once. This
can drive you nuts. Try to break that habit now because your weight
loss will slow down as time passes. My loss was something like this -
1stmo - 31#, 2nd mo - 13#, 3rd mo - 10 lb, 4th mo - 9# and downhill
from there. Slow and steady. At 16 months out I am one pound from
goal.
Please do not starve yourself! Follow your diet (which is pretty
much liquids and mush for now) and eat as much nutritious food as you
can whenever you are healed. Starving yourself to lose faster will
only hurt you. Food is fuel. We need fuel to keep our motor
running! If you fall into a pattern of starving you will slow down
your metabolism, deplete your energy, and be really grouchy. :):):)
I wish I could turn up the clock so these days pass faster for
you "newbies" but it must pass one day at a time. The best is yet to
come!
Mike, write to us when you get home and let us know how you are doing.
Have a great day.

well i was diagnosed a while ago with a bad pap.. but im still very
new to the whole outbreak thing.. But i do know that it can remain
dormant for years and never have an outbreak but you can still spread
it to others.. and one thing to keep in mind.. its skin to skin
contact that spreads it.. not bodily fluids.. so condoms really dont
work for this kind of std.. just like herpes..
but just be sure to get yourself tested every 6 months from here on

Re: [Dr_Hargroder] Medicine

2007-06-17 22:32:13

Laurie,

I think medicine does absorb faster, at least it does for me. And I also find that I can take a smaller dose. For example, with liquid Motrin, I only take a small amount, and only if I really, really need it, and it works well (for a headache). I don't like to take it very often because I don't want to irritate my stomach. I never could drink very much alcohol before my surgery - it would go straight to my head, so I'd hate to think what it would do now!

Sex and HPV

My boyfriend has HPV and my tests are at the lab. He "discovered"
his HPV because of an outbreak and went to the dr. I haven't ever
had symptoms, although that doesn't garuntee anything. Once he
heals up, so to speak, we're going to find it impossible to resist
sex. How can we have sex safely if I don't have it or even if I
do. I am scared to have sex right now and all this is totally new
to me. After 8 months something suddenly shows up and its hard to
believe that he has been faithful even though HPV can be dormant. I
am pretty lost about dealing with this and any encouragement or
information would help.

I'm afraid I agree with the other response: it doesn't sound like
genital warts. Maybe an ingrown hair, mean hair follicle, or
something? But if there are many, maybe.. I don't know. See your
doctor while they are there. Maybe see another doctor? To be sure..
I've never heard of a gw coming to a head with puss.

Re: [Dr_Hargroder] Upset

2007-06-17 00:10:53

Don't feel bad Laurie... I haven't loss anything since Sunday either and it's driving me crazy... I don't know what the deal is but I can't imagen why I'm not losing... I was told this is normal but it so aggravating getting on the scale and it's not moving... the only bright thing is at least it isn't going up... it's just staying the same... Are you going to the meeting tonight at Neweigh...???

Re: [hpv_support] ok without sounding nasty

2007-06-16 13:38:54

That's not genital warts, lolli. I strongly suggest
you find time to get to the doctor.

Upset

2007-06-16 08:16:27

I am upset I have only lost another pound. I am not eating, so why I am
not losing. Okay I did eat 5 bites of oatmeal today and some smashed
redbeans last night. That is the only "solid" food I have had. So I have
only lost 25lbs. I guess that really isn't bad for 13 days, but the scale
hasn't moved since Sunday. Isn't it to soon for me to be hitting a
plateau???

ok without sounding nasty

2007-06-16 00:28:31

i was diagnosed with HPV i'd say about a year or two ago.. have had
bad paps every since.. but just recently i've been having actual
external outbreaks... they say its cause i'm stressed out and that
lowers your immune system or whatever.. But my nasty question is
this...
are genital warts almost like pimples? i mean i had one.. and i dont
have the time to go to the dr. every time i see one so i just wait
for it to go away.. but it looked almost like a white head.. and well
when i put pressure on it.. puss stuff came out and it was gone in
two days.. i mean some of them jsut seem hard.. and since i dont go
to the gyno every time.. i put hydrogyn peroxide on them hopeing to
get rid of them... any thoughts?
sorry so graphic :(

There was talk about a Saturday meeting at RWMC, our group has been
asking about the date... Does anyone have any information? Or has
it been discussed at one of the meetings? Since we live in Central
Louisiana, it's impossible for us to attend a meeting during the

Can anyone provide me with some information regarding Beta-Mannan
such as how well it works. I am seriously thinking of purchasing it

other than the company.

Re: [hpv_support] i cant take this

2007-06-14 12:54:17

Hi
I'm no doctor, but it kinda sounds like hemorrhoids. There's a lot of ignorant doctors. I remember when I went to this small clinic and I told the doctor I wanted to get checked for HPV, and she was like "HPV? That's something only women get", I was so confused, I belived her and just went back home.
Where are you located?
I went to this other clinic in NYC and I got treated for free. It's a really nice place, and everyone is very polite.
I got them frozen in February and haven't seen/felt anything every since!
good luck

Hey guys, I plan to come to the December meeting. Is it Dec. 7th at
6:30? Also, I know that this is one that we bring a covered dish to,
but I will be leaving work and heading up there. Could I bring
something "non-food" like plates or cups? I might be able to come up
with something that won't spoil if I bring it to work for the day. I
need to check out some recipes. Just let me know...

Nutritional supplements

2007-06-13 23:23:40

There are a few good internet sites that list side
effects for various chemicals and nutritional
supplements. Often these sites have better
information than is supplied by the manufacturer. One
possible side effect of large doses of Vitamin C is
kidney stones, so if you are having pains in your
back, you might want to get that checked out. 2 grams
a day is considered a very large dose.
Its difficult to find solid scientific information on
vitamins because there is so much information supplied
by people who are stating opinions rather than
deriving their suggestions from well-designed
scientific studies. The nutritional supplement
industry has a lot to gain financially by encouraging
people to tout their products as promoting health.
There arem however, studies carried out by excellent
researchers. Some have directly addressed how
supplements affect the course of hpv infections. With
some effort you can track these down online using
search engines.
The important thing is not to confuse correlation with
cause. Over time many people's hpv symptoms subside
or disappear completely, with no intervention. If you
start taking supplements and find your symptoms
abating, can you say it was caused by the supplements
or was it merely a correlation? As one researcher
noted, many people could bury a potato in their
backyard and find that their hpv symptoms decrease or
go away. Only a well-designed scientific study will
be able to determine if a supplement is really causing
the change in symptoms. That usually means comparing
groups of people who either use or don't use the
supplement. If anyone is interested in doing the
research, it would be helpful to collect scientific
research that shows which nutritional supplements have
a significant effect on the hpv virus and its
symptoms. The ones I named in my previous email do
have studies to support their efficacy.

It's A South Of The Border Fiesta In Atlanta!

2007-06-13 09:06:06

Atlanta's Fourth Annual HOTLANTA event is coming up fast!

When? August 14-17 2003

Where? The Atlanta Airport's Westin Hotel - Rooms are $79.00 per night and you MUST tell them you are with "The Atlanta Club" to get this special rate.

How much? $38.00 - Fee goes up to $48.00 on July 20th, so register early and $$ave!!

Que Pasa a la Fiesta - Early Bird Registrations will be taking place from 12-4 Thursday the 14th in the Swan Room.

Thursday night'ers have a choice: You can go to the HELP meeting with Matthew from 7-9pm and then head over to B52's OR you can meet me in the lobby of the Westin at 8pm and we'll take the hotel shuttle over to B52's to get a head start on the meeting go'ers.

B52's is a great little place with pool tables, a dance floor, food, video games, etc. It's nice & cozy, and we should have the place pretty much to ourselves, if it's anything like last year.

If you are planning to go to the HELP meeting, please email Matthew @ AtlantaHClub . com so he will know how many people to arrange transportation for.

Friday the 15th - Breakfast at 10am at Palio's, they have a yummy breakfast buffet and it's around $10.95 per person for us. (You will get your coupons when you register)

Registrations from 11-6 in the Swan Room - After you check in with the hotel, PLEASE come staight to the Swan Room to get your nametags, wristbands, etc. Once you are all checked in, you have several choices of what to do from there. If you would like to go explore Atlanta, you can take the hotel shuttle to the Marta station and from there you can go just about anywhere! Check with anyone from Atlanta to get ideas of interesting places to see.

If you would rather just stick around the hotel and see your friends as they come in, you can either head on up to the pool or you can hang out at the hotel bar which is right by the Swan Room, so you won't miss anyone!

Friday night - Meet in the Swan Room at 7pm for a night of meeting, greeting, dancing, mingling, karaoke-ing, and general mayhem. We will have our own bartender IN the Swan Room this year, so you don't have to go out to Martini's (the name of the hotel bar) to get a drink. We will have the Swan Room until 12pm, then we will migrate to the hotel bar for drinks and I'm sure someone will have a bash in their room again this year. (Deena? Craig?)

Saturday the 16th - For those alive at 10:00am, we will be meeting at Palio's for breakfast. Then, from 12 - 5, it's the by-now-World-Famous HOTlanta pool party! We will have music, water-volleyball, and other pool games. Lunch will be served at 1:00 and will be pretty much the same as last year: sub sandwiches, sodas, chips, veggie & fruit trays, etc.

Saturday night - "The Fiesta" in the banquet room! There will be an All-You-Can-Eat Mexican buffet, music, dancing, more mingling and party games (No, not strip poker! LOL). There will also be a cash bar (complete with margaritas!) so we don't have to go downstairs to get drinks. Have your party shoes on because this is the main event and we will be going strong all night!

Sunday - Meet in Palio's again for breakfast, then good-byes in the hotel lobby. First-timers: You will want to have an address book or something to take notes on, so that you can keep in touch with all the great friends you've made over the weekend!!

I bought some atkins shakes because they are high in protein and low carb.

Has anyone else had success with those?

I would use one package until it was gone. Not ideal, I'd guess, but it worked. I just figured I'd keep some around in case I needed it in the future.

i was just wondering if anyone knew why it is not recommended to use
the remainder of the cream on your next application. does it start
to break down chemically after it is opened?
also, can anyone recommend a remedy for the irritation i get from
using aldara?
all suggestions appreciated. thanks!

I've now been told by two doctors to reuse my Aldara. LOL. One packet
lasted me a week, then she said to toss it even if there's any left
after a week. She had me secure the top with a paperclip, then seal it
in a ziplock. Worked OK for me. Got rid of my warts. For irritation,
didn't someone say something about vitamin e? Eh ... don't ask me, I
obviously don't know for sure. LOL.

Re: [hpv_support] i have some questions, please help!!!

2007-06-10 18:38:58

Just writing you from experience (although everyone's bodies are different) My boyfriend and I both have HPV...we only know because I got warts. We still had sex when I had an outbreak...and to this day he has yet to get an outbreak. It will be 3 years in October that we've known about it.

It has never stopped us...and I've never had internal warts either. It just depends on how comfortable you guys are with each other, and how comfortable you are with yourself.

All I know is that you can be certain that HPV varies from person to
person, sometimes quite a bit.

i have some questions, please help!!!

2007-06-10 11:08:45

i was diagnosed with genital warts a year ago and am still having outbreaks :( . my boyfriend has shown nothing yet, but if i have sex with him while i have a bump does that increase his chance of one showing up?? this is very stressful and is putting a bit of a damper on our relationship. we are very much in love but everytime we start getting "into it" i fall into a depression because i know i cant do anything. i am using aldara now, which worked before but the bumps i have now just wont seem to go away. does anyone have any ideas of what i can do to get my sex life back to normal?

oh yeah, and one more question: if he has no bumps on his penis, and we have sex, can that make me get internal warts??

thank you all for your help its great to be able to relate to someone and actually get some answers since my doctor and gynecologist seem to be absolutely clueless about the subject :)

Common HPV pictures? Not worst case Scenario ones

2007-06-09 18:39:49

I've researched and read just about everything about HPV. (With a few
extra sleepless nights) So now I'm educated, resting, and refocused
on my diet/exercise, but the more pictures I look at, the more I
wonder if it really was/is HPV. I know most pictures are worst case,
but still I wonder because they really looked nothing like any of
them.
Well mine where brown spots, raised and grew over over time. I sort
of now wish I took a picture.
Anyway, I did find this intresting web site with information and good
pictures of about EVERYTHING but HPV. Found this a bit strange...

2007-06-09 03:23:51

I had cryo done on my first wart 4 years ago. I had no scarring
whatsoever. And nothing came back, until 4 years later. After about
two weeks everything looked normal... I'm considering saying screw-
it to aldara and go back for cryo again, even though its a fairly
undesirable method, pain wise.

Re: [hpv_support] Aldara!

2007-06-09 00:30:19

I have used aldara. I am a girl so it may have different results for you. It took awhile to see results. I tried it for two months and saw nothing. It caused a lot of irratation. I couldn't go to the bathroom, walk, stand up, sit down, not a good expierience. But like I said I am a girl so the results may be different. If you can try to get them talking off with acid. I went in every week and had the doctor apply it. I had a really bad break out and it took about a month for them to go away. It was a lot better

Hope that helped.

I'm trying Aldara now for about a week. I'm hoping I get some

Ok, i've read a few places on the web about this, but I would like
some experiences from others?
"Cryosurgery leaves little or no scar. After the area has healed, the
treated skin may be a bit lighter in color than the skin around it."
Has it stayed lighter? If not how long did it take for the color to
come back? I've heard 6 months - 1 year?

Re: Im trying oxi-med has anyone else?

2007-06-07 05:17:23

Hi Bob,
I tried Oxy-med a few months ago, it did absolutely nothing for me,
but they did give me a refund when I sent it back to them. I've tried
just about everything and so far the only thing that worked a little
bit was "Warts No More" made by "Forces of Nature" but it only worked
on some of my warts, not all. It seems like different things work for
different people, so Oxy-med could work for you...who knows? I am
trying the Condysil creme right now. I've been on it for less than 3
wks and I am not sure if its working. You're supposed to use it for 4-
6 wks, and the thing is almost empty already because they tell you to
really glob it on. I just ordered another thing of the creme and also
a bottle of the Condysil gel in case the creme doesn't work. The gel
has a small amount of salycylic acid in it and I haven't tried any
products with any acid in them yet, so maybe
