Hi there -
I'm new to the group... and of course, I have questions. My doctor
only half answers the questions I ask her, and I sometimes don't
think she even knows what the heck she's talking about. It seems from
the info I can find online that so very little is known about HPV,
*especially* if you don't have warts.
I was diagnosed with HPV about 2 years ago (age 26 at the time) -
after not having been sexually active for 7 years (yes, really, :P).
I've never had a genital wart, and never shown any symptoms, other
than an abnormal pap about 5 years before diagnosis. I had a
colposcopy then (and have had two since - if I NEVER have to do that
again, I will be thrilled), but my doctor then (changed doctors
since) said she found nothing. All paps were normal after that until
2 years ago. My doctor had very little information for me upon
diagnosis, only that it was the most common STD, that I didn't have
the one that caused genital warts (though she's never told me which
one I have), and that it meant paps every six months (oh yay). She
also said that the strain I have doesn't affect men (I had JUST met
my now boyfriend and was worried more about that...) but that they
can carry it and infect others.
She did mention something about infections... and this is where my
first question comes in. At the time I did some research, and
concluded that this was mainly just an annoyance. I seem to remember
reading though that women with HPV were more prone to other
infections (though I may have made this up - I cannot seem to find
what I read before). Anyway, since then I've had BV (bacterial
vaginosis for those of you who have not yet suffered that indignity),
two yeast infections, and now I've got some sort of mysterious
bacterial infection that won't go away. Just today I got back results
after having been treated and seen again - no go. Still there. On to
the second round of Azithromycin. My doctor again mentioned that this
had something to do with the HPV, but good lord, she just doesn't
fully explain anything. (My BF also had to be treated, as she said
it's an infection that can be passed around, though it's not an STD
[?] and the most frustrating part is that she's instructed me to have
no sexual relations until this is cleared up. Um. That is not easy.)
Has anyone else experienced more problems with infections since
contracting HPV? Or is it just me? Can anyone possible shed any light
onto a mysterious bacterial infection that has some sort of effect on
how often you have to pee, but isn't a bladder infection??
The second round of questioning kind of ties into all this too. Even
after treating the yeast infection, I've had some pretty bad problems
with itching. When I asked the doctor about it, she mentioned Aldara,
even though I do not have warts (I have checked and double checked,
feeling around and getting into some weird poses in front of the
mirror. :P). I cannot find anything online that suggests you should
use Aldara on anything but the actual warts, in fact one of the side
effects seems to be itching, so it seems an odd suggestion to me.
Anyone come across this sort of phenomenon?
I'm going to try and corner her and MAKE her answer more completely
next time, but in the meantime, I'm looking for information to arm
myself with. Any know-it-alls out there (and I mean that in a good
way) who can help me build the arsenal?
Ok, and one more probably stupid question: I had warts on my hand
when I was a kid, and have had a flat wart on my neck since I was 10.
(Never cared enough to get rid of it, and you can't really see it.) I
know that everything I've read says that those and the STD version of
HPV and genital warts are all supposed to be different... but I'm
just curious how many of you have had other kinds of warts. Feel free
to email me privately or whatever you like. (Even though I doubt
there are more than 3 people who have read this far, and even less
that will respond. :P)
Pardon my first post being this long, and I hope no one's offended by
the sense of humor I use to deal with this kind of crapola. I just
find if you can't laugh about something, the only other thing to do
is wallow in misery, and that isn't near as fun as laughing about
it. :)
Also, I just have to say, I went back and read past posts before
posting this, and I'm really impressed with the way you all deal with
this stuff - and I'm glad I found you guys already. If it weren't for
reading all of your frank and open emails, I wouldn't have asked all
these questions. So, what I'm saying is, it's your own fault. :)
(just kidding, of course.)
Thanks!
Melanie
